Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Locks $1B+ Gehry Museum Opening for December 2026

A December 11, 2026 opening date is now locked in for the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism announced today. The confirmation closes the chapter on one of Frank Gehry’s final unfinished commissions: an 861,000-square-foot museum that stands as his largest institutional project by floor area.

Gehry, a Pritzker Prize laureate, died at the end of last year. He left behind a substantial architectural legacy and several buildings still mid-construction. The Abu Dhabi museum was his first design for the Middle East, rooted in a concept he first presented in 2006.

The building’s form is unmistakably his. A composition of monolithic and conical structures carries the deconstructivist vocabulary familiar from the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Guggenheim Bilbao in Spain. Ten cones define the structure, serving aesthetic and functional ends simultaneously: they provide shade and improve airflow for visitors. One cone is clad in onyx and glass; the remaining nine are wrapped in stainless-steel mesh.

Inside, a central atrium distributes visitor flow across 30 galleries. Nearly 125,000 square feet of interior gallery space will be paired with roughly 250,000 square feet of outdoor exhibition areas, giving the venue considerable capacity for contemporary art presentation. The Guggenheim Foundation has been assembling a permanent collection since 2009, focused on modern and contemporary works sourced globally.

The museum sits on Saadiyat Island, overlooking the Persian Gulf, in a waterfront cluster that already includes the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Zayed National Museum. That concentration of major international institutions has steadily positioned the island as a destination for art and heritage on a global scale.

The partnership between the Guggenheim Foundation and Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism has been years in the making. Dr. Mariët Westermann, director and CEO of the Solomon R. The Guggenheim Foundation already operates museums in New York, Bilbao, and Venice. Abu Dhabi will extend that network into the Middle East for the first time. What remains to be seen is how the permanent collection, assembled over more than fifteen years, will be presented across those 30 galleries when the doors finally open in December 2026.
