US, UAE Launch Joint Military AI Operations to Boost Intelligence and Defense

Task Force Talon Synapse, the first bilateral military AI initiative between the United States and the United Arab Emirates, is set to begin operations within weeks, according to a Tuesday announcement from U.S. Central Command.

The task force will concentrate on three operational domains: embedding AI applications into intelligence support functions, safeguarding critical infrastructure against emerging threats, and conducting enhanced monitoring of the regional security environment. The structure reflects a deliberate alignment of both nations’ strategic priorities in defense technology development.

Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Central Command, framed the partnership in direct terms. “This will be a historic milestone as we work with one of our most capable regional partners to rapidly deliver evolving AI advancements to our warfighters,” Cooper said. Abu Dhabi will host the task force, which draws approximately 20 American and Emirati personnel. Each member brings specialized expertise in artificial intelligence, data analysis, or cybersecurity. The groundwork traces back to discussions held last year between Cooper and UAE National Security Advisor Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed al-Nahyan. Momentum accelerated during a recent CENTCOM visit to the region, where military leadership met with prominent AI industry figures to assess technological readiness and partnership opportunities.

The UAE’s investment in AI-driven defense modernization has been sustained and deliberate. Over the past decade, the emirate has pursued multiple collaborative arrangements designed to strengthen its military capabilities through autonomous systems and advanced technologies. One notable partnership involved Anduril, a defense technology company, in the coproduction of advanced autonomous drones. The new task force builds on that established pattern of technology adoption and operational integration.

By contrast, the diplomatic dimension has moved in parallel. In March 2025, the White House hosted al-Nahyan for bilateral discussions centered on AI and emerging technology alongside broader relations between the two countries. A UAE government statement issued at that time described al-Nahyan’s view that artificial intelligence adoption constitutes a national responsibility requiring sustained institutional commitment.

The task force structure reflects a model increasingly common in defense partnerships: dedicated teams housed in a single location, staffed by vetted personnel with complementary expertise, and focused on specific operational outcomes rather than broad strategic dialogue. This approach allows both nations to move at what CENTCOM describes as “speed and scale,” without the lengthy interagency coordination processes that typically slow technology integration in military contexts.
