Arsenal’s 3-0 demolition of Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday opened with a goal timed at just 23 seconds, the earliest strike in the fixture’s opening minute in 58 years. That detail alone set the tone for what became a thoroughly one-sided afternoon at the Principality Stadium.

Myles Lewis-Skelly threaded a pass to left back Riccardo Calafiori, who finished calmly past Gianluigi Donnarumma before most supporters had settled into their seats. From that moment, Manchester City never recovered their footing.

The result handed new City manager Enzo Maresca a defeat in his very first fixture, while giving Mikel Arteta’s side early-season momentum and a fourth consecutive victory over their opponents in this competition, extending Arsenal’s record against City in the Community Shield to a perfect 100%.

After the final whistle, Odegaard was direct about what the performance signalled. “We showed our level today, we showed that we’re ready,” he told TNT Sports. “I think we showed that we’re serious, we want to do it again. There’s more trophies to go for and that’s the aim.”

He also referenced the Champions League title that eluded Arsenal in their final against Paris St Germain, framing Sunday’s win as part of a larger competitive appetite. “At this club, you want to win all of them. But of course, that’s a big one,” he said.

Arsenal face Coventry City in their Premier League opener on Friday. Whether the ruthlessness on display at the Principality Stadium carries into a full league campaign is the question the rest of the division will be watching closely.
