UAE Education Overhaul Set to Reshape K-12 Instruction; Curriculum Shifts Begin 2026-27

A sweeping curriculum overhaul approved by the UAE Ministry of Education will reshape instruction across kindergarten through Grade 12 when the 2026-27 academic year begins, touching science, mathematics, languages, technology and the arts in ways that signal a deliberate consolidation of the country’s educational architecture.

The revisions carry clear structural logic: streamline pathways, reduce elective fragmentation and align content sequences more tightly with learning progression. In science, courses for Grades 9 and 10 in the General Education track have been restructured, as has physics instruction for Grades 10 to 12 in the Advanced track. Optional subjects previously available to Grade 11 students in both General and Advanced tracks will be discontinued, replaced by unified study pathways. Grade 12 students will encounter a reduced number of elective pathway scenarios across both tracks.

Language of instruction has shifted for certain subjects in private schools. Science for Grade 9 Advanced track students will move from Arabic to English; mathematics for the same cohort follows the same path. These are not cosmetic changes. They reflect a broader realignment of how core disciplines are delivered and, for private school operators, may require staffing and resource adjustments ahead of the rollout.

Mathematics instruction has been restructured at multiple levels. The Grade 12 curriculum is now aligned across General and Applied tracks. The content sequence for Grade 5 in both tracks has been reorganized to reinforce prerequisite knowledge before students advance. Weekly mathematics periods for Grades 3 and 4 have been reduced from seven to six, accompanied by new comprehensive curriculum guides and instructional plans.

Meanwhile, technology curricula have undergone the most visible consolidation. The ministry has merged Design, Innovation and Computer Science (CCDI) and the Artificial Intelligence curriculum into a single unified subject titled “Artificial Intelligence and Technology,” spanning all three educational cycles. New AI lessons have been aligned with the National Artificial Intelligence Curriculum Framework, with content reprioritized following the merger. The move positions AI literacy as a core rather than supplementary competency.

Chinese language instruction has been discontinued in kindergarten and Grades 1 and 2, with class periods reallocated elsewhere. Kindergarten subjects have been refined more broadly, including updates to student learning outcomes, progression levels and English-language assessment guides.

Arabic language curriculum has been enhanced across all three educational cycles. The “Rawafed” workbook has been strengthened for Grade 1 and 2 students, while the “Madarej Al Qira’a” reading book has been divided into three separate volumes organized by student reading level. Islamic Education guides for Grades 1 to 12 have been reviewed and further developed.

English language instruction has received parallel attention. Comprehensive curriculum guides have been developed for the first educational cycle, and progression between Grades 4 and 5 has been adjusted. The Advanced Track series has been adopted as the primary learning resource for the second cycle, while third cycle resources are being developed and aligned.

Social studies and moral education have been updated to integrate “Al San’,” the UAE’s traditional social and cultural etiquette and values, into the Moral Education curriculum. Guides for the third educational cycle have been developed and reorganized by grade, with each grade now receiving a separate guide for the first semester.

Physical and health education has expanded its offerings with new sports units and the introduction of an “Active Girls” unit in the third educational cycle. Business Studies has been enhanced through enrichment activities for Grade 9 and 10 students and expanded family projects content, developed in recognition of the Year of the Family.

Visual arts instruction now features separate comprehensive curriculum guides for each grade from Grade 1through Grade 12. Music education learning resources for the first educational cycle have been linked to relevant content in the Arabic language curriculum.

The scale of the overhaul, spanning virtually every subject area and most grade levels, raises a practical question for schools: whether the implementation infrastructure, trained teachers, updated materials, and assessment tools, will be fully in place before classrooms open in 2026.
