Abu Dhabi Comic Con Monetizes Fandom: $16M Event Signals Shift to Commercial Marketplace

Vendor ecosystem and celebrity appearances drive revenue growth at Middle East's largest fan convention

A Dh60,000 cosplay prize pool and a sold-out TCG Arena signal how decisively the Middle East Film and Comic Con has shifted from fan gathering to commercial marketplace. Now in its 14th year, the convention runs Friday through Sunday at Abu Dhabi’s Adnec Centre, drawing on last year’s attendance of more than 46,000 visitors and a vendor ecosystem that has grown steadily more specialized and revenue-oriented.

The event’s economic architecture rests on several distinct revenue streams. Celebrity appearances anchor the top of the market: John Cena headlines a guest list that includes Mackenyu and Jacob Romero Gibson from One Piece, Pom Klementieff from Guardians of the Galaxy, Arden Cho from Avatar: The Last Airbender, Charithra Chandran from Bridgerton and Joonas Suotamo from Star Wars. Fans purchase vouchers for photographs and autographs, attend panels and Q&As on the Main Stage, and generate the kind of high-margin transactional traffic that anchors convention economics globally.

Below that tier, the vendor floor is where the convention’s commercial depth becomes visible. Independent artists, illustrators and small creative businesses operate alongside larger retailers and publishers, selling self-published manga, handmade phone cases, original artwork, figures, trading cards and limited-edition collectibles. This base has grown more sophisticated over time, with returning vendors reporting stronger audience recognition and repeat buyers.

Omani digital comic artist Fatima Al Lawati has attended MEFCC since 2017, selling her self-published manga alongside merchandise including key chains, pins, stickers and posters. She began developing her manga in 2004 and published her first book in 2015. “Every year it becomes more enjoyable,” she says. “I get to meet new people, meet new artists and celebrities, and the event itself is so much fun.”

By contrast, newer entrants are still calibrating their market fit. Duaa Alrefaie, the artist behind UAE-based Shades Studio, is attending her second MEFCC with products built around decoden, a Japanese decorative technique that uses cream-like materials to produce elaborate designs. Her line covers customized phone cases, jewelry boxes, compact mirrors, photo holders and key chains. “The people here, the community and the buyers, appreciate this form of art more than anywhere else I have exhibited in the UAE,” she says. “I wanted to come back to present my work somewhere where it is appreciated.”

Format strategy is also becoming a competitive variable. Abu Dhabi-based Sandstorm Comics, a publisher developing original comics and children’s books, is testing smaller manga-sized editions of some titles alongside standard larger formats this year. Editor-in-chief Mo Abedin says research found the audience split almost evenly between the two. “Some people enjoy the art in a larger format because, obviously, it’s a comic,” he says. “But some people also want something on the go, something they can put in their bags or take on a plane.” Sandstorm is simultaneously pushing Little Storm, its children’s publishing line built around Emirati identity, stories and values. “Children finally have books they can read with people who look like them, eat the same food they eat and have the same names they have,” Abedin says.

The competitive and experiential programming has expanded to match. A new TCG Arena hosts Pokemon, One Piece and Magic: The Gathering tournaments across the weekend, with 300 player places in total plus newcomer sessions. The cosplay competition’s Dh60,000 prize pool is the headline figure, with the winning UAE team earning a berth at the 2027 World Cosplay Summit finals in Nagoya, Japan. Crunchyroll, the anime streaming platform, joins as a new exhibitor this year, running an Ultimate Anime Experience with licensed installations, photo opportunities and giveaways. The Otaku District adds J-pop and J-rock covers, karaoke, dance performances, quizzes, choreography workshops and Random Play Dance.

Larger entertainment brands are also buying into the audience. A Resident Evil installation recreates a house from the upcoming film, complete with cryptic telephone recordings and video game references. Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi is providing a Batmobile photo opportunity and a DC costume competition. Black+Decker has a collaborative sketch wall, DIY shelf-building activities and artists customizing air fryers live across the weekend.

For independent creators, MEFCC functions as both marketplace and networking infrastructure. For major entertainment companies and retailers, it delivers a concentrated, highly engaged consumer base. The question heading into future editions is whether the convention’s commercial infrastructure, prize pools, streaming partnerships and brand activations, continues to scale in step with its attendance, or whether the two begin to pull in different directions.
