Abu Dhabi tourism department rolls out 40-plus event season
A mandate-driven calendar of culture, heritage and sport into 2027
Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism has set out a season-long programme of more than 40 events running through early 2027, a calendar that places the emirate’s cultural institutions and policy-driven tourism strategy at the centre of its public agenda. Announced on 12 October 2026, the line-up is presented by Experience Abu Dhabi and spans culture, sport, music and family entertainment, with the department framing the season as part of the emirate’s wider global ambitions.
The institutional footprint is substantial. The Department of Culture and Tourism, the body mandated to drive sustainable growth of the emirate’s culture and tourism sectors and creative industries, coordinates the calendar in partnership with the organisations that define Abu Dhabi’s position as an international destination. Its stated role includes uniting the ecosystem around a shared vision, coordinating effort and investment, and deploying policies and systems to support the industries under its remit.
The season’s most significant institutional milestone arrives on 11 December: the opening of Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. Designed by the late Frank Gehry, the museum on Saadiyat Island will be dedicated to modern and contemporary art, adding a major institution to Saadiyat Cultural District and reinforcing the district’s standing as a global cultural destination. Its arrival coincides with the first anniversaries of three institutions: Al Ain Museum, which reopened in October after extensive redevelopment; Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, whose exhibits span 13.8 billion years of history and include Stan the T. rex, one of the world’s most complete dinosaur skeletons; and Zayed National Museum, which traces 300,000 years of human history on the land through six galleries honouring the UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
Al Ain Museum carries particular institutional weight. Founded in 1969 by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, it was the nation’s first museum and now spans more than 8,000 square metres, featuring newly discovered archaeological sites and exhibits on the ancient falaj irrigation system that made settlement in the region possible.
Policy and convening feature prominently too. Culture Summit Abu Dhabi, running from 8 to 10 December at Manarat Al Saadiyat and across Saadiyat Cultural District, gathers cultural leaders, artists, policymakers and thinkers under the theme Towards a Reimagined Commons, examining how culture shapes shared memories, spaces and futures. The Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial, which opens on 23 October in Al Ain Region and continues in Abu Dhabi from 15 November with works on display into 2027, brings contemporary art into public spaces across the emirate.
Meanwhile, the calendar extends the reach of international cultural platforms. Frieze Abu Dhabi makes its debut from 19 to 22 November at Manarat Al Saadiyat, building on nearly two decades of Abu Dhabi Art and connecting the emirate with Frieze’s global network of galleries, artists and collectors. NOMAD Abu Dhabi, an immersive international art and design fair, runs from 18 to 22 November at Terminal 1 of the Old Abu Dhabi Airport, gathering collectors, curators and cultural leaders.
Heritage programming reflects a mandate of transmission as much as exhibition. The Traditional Handicrafts Festival, from 23 October to 11 November, brings together master artisans, live demonstrations and a cultural market, with the department framing it as supporting the passing of traditions to new generations. The Maritime Heritage Festival returns to the Corniche from 20 to 29 November for its fifth year, presenting fishing, pearl diving and seafaring traditions to new audiences. Al Hosn Festival runs from 15 to 30 January 2027 at Al Hosn Cultural Site.
By contrast, the entertainment side carries commercial and international weight. UFC returns to Etihad Arena this October, with featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski defending his title against Movsar Evloev and Petr Yan facing Merab Dvalishvili in a trilogy fight on 24 October. The Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, a fixture on Yas Island since 2009, runs from 3 to 6 December, with the Yasalam After-Race Concerts featuring Lewis Capaldi, Imagine Dragons, The Chainsmokers and The Script, and Anyma headlining the Official After-Party on 4 December. Performances throughout 2026 by Tamer Hosny and Tamer Ashour, the Liwa International Festival at Al Dhafra desert’s Tal Moreeb, the fourth season of Saadiyat Nights, Abu Dhabi Comedy Season at Etihad Arena and the Mother of the Nation Festival, named in honour of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, round out the programme.
Taken together, the calendar shows how the department exercises its mandate: coordinating institutions, international partnerships and public programming under a single vision for the emirate’s cultural and economic position.
